The Feds message to a teenage girl from Britain? Get the Gardasil vaccination or be deported. What do you think?
Simone Davis, 17, originally from England, is now hoping to become a U.S. citizen. The aspiring elementary school teacher and devout Christian, says she does not want to get the often-controversial Gardasil vaccination, which can protect against the sexually transmitted disease human papillomavirus linked to cervical cancer.
According to reports, Davis says she doesn't plan to have sex until she's married, so she believes the vaccination has no use to her. U.S. officials, however, say that if she doesn't get the shot, her immigration status may be in jeopardy.
Since 2008, the U.S. has required that female immigrants between the ages of 11 and 26 get the Gardasil vaccination, even though U.S. citizens in the same age group are not required by law to get the shot.
And, some more fodder for discussion: While most health experts believe that Gardasil is generally safe, there have been reports of adverse side affects, including blood clots, and even some possible Gardasil-related deaths.
What do you think? Should young women like Simone be required to get the shot or lose their citizenship, or is this taking things too far?
